Where we ate: Second Bar & Kitchen, Austin TX
Meal type: Brunch
Party size: 2
I don’t use the word ‘chic’ to describe things like Belle does but for this restaurant, I can’t think of a better description.
The interior design was chic but that’s easy. What really stood out was how chic the dishes were.
Second Bar and Kitchen serves up plenty of primal/paleo dishes and does so in a classy yet lively way. We hit them up for brunch this time and here’s how it went down.
I’m not typically one to initiate brunch plans but my fiancé, Belle, like most young women, loves brunch so I’ll sometimes join in on the fun.
Second Bar & Kitchen has a fantastic environment and caters perfectly to a brunch crowd. Each table flows into the next and although you can’t understand any other conversations, you can still feed off the lively energy.
Here is how we started our brunch:
Blistered Shishito Peppers
I went with the something that’s not typically primal – pizza. Except, it was soup.
The other starter plate that is primal/paleo friendly:
- Cheese board (really good variety!)
You main choices for brunch plates are salads or egg-based dishes. Here are the two we went with:
Of course, avoid the fried potato cakes. The poached eggs, tomatoes, and spinach were perfectly prepared.
Steak and Eggs
This was a very caveman meal. I love chomping into pieces of steak and washing it down with medium cooked eggs. There are some tortilla strips on top but they are easily removed or, if you want a harmless cheat, their texture perfectly offsets the tenderness of the steak and eggs.
Belle supplemented her meal with sparkling wine because…that’s what Belle does. I stuck with coffee.
Other primal/paleo friendly dishes that you could also get down with:
- Raw kale and carrot salad (comes with grilled shrimp)
- Romaine chopped salad
- Breakfast club
- Seared trout
If you’re looking for a brunch spot that is full of life but doesn’t rest on $1 mimosas, Second Bar & Kitchen is an excellent choice.
