Where we ate: Perlas, Austin TX
Meal type: Dinner
Party size: 2
It was Belle’s birthday and she had a craving for seafood. Totally Primal. What could easily be one of the best spots in town for all sorts of seafood is Perlas.
The dishes all taste amazing and the food is so fresh but what I get the biggest kick out of is the outside seating area.
Perlas is located on the corner of a side street and a popular road yet with an elevated deck and trees that enclose the restaurant, you almost feel like your seaside eating food straight from the water.
There are a number of small dishes you can order to get your meal off to a good start.
Grilled Octopus & Papas Brava: The octopus sits on top of tiny chunks of potatoes, which you can easily avoid depending on how keto you are.
We washed down the delicious octopus with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc (dry white wine). Then we moved on to our middle portion of the dinner – oysters.
I find it’s always best to get a little bit of food in your stomach before slurping down some oysters because they can be eaten so quickly that if you’re too hungry you might miss the flavor.
Oysters: Full dozen mix of Maine, Massachusetts, and Prince Edward Island (PEI)
Now, people say that oysters from different areas, especially different coasts, have different flavors but my pallet must not be advanced enough because I’ve never noticed a difference.
That said, they tasted as perfect as I’d imagine an oyster to taste.
For our main dishes, I ordered an actually dinner plate but Belle ordered a few small plates. Her meal consisted of:
Cornmeal Fried Okra with Remoulade (lightly fried, not entirely primal)
Vine Ripe Tomato & English Cucumber Gazpacho
Crab Louie & Cornmeal Fried Green Tomatoes
And since it wasn’t my birthday, I didn’t need to order a table worth of dishes. Here is my dinner choice:
Oak Grilled Hawaiian Escolar: Grapes, Lambert’s Bacon, Cucumber, Goat Cheese (All primal)
To my surprise, Belle did not opt for any birthday desserts. Maybe she was saving room for more wine?
Some other notable primal/paleo options on the menu:
- PEI Mussels Steamed in Modelo Especial
- Roasted Beets & Warm Cambozola Cheese
- Bay Scallop Pozole Verde
- Fish: Halibut, Scallops, Hamachi, Lobster, Swordfish, Texas Redfish, Hawaiian Wahoo
- Steaks: Oak grilled tenderloin, Oak grilled NY Strip
Remember, the atmosphere and environment are just as good as the food. This says a lot because the food is first class.
They even have a giant fish tank with colorful fish you can watch while your hostess gets ready to seat you.
