Where we ate: Fresas Chicken al Carbon, Austin TX
Meal type: Dinner
Party size: 2
First we were greeted by a valet attendant, who turns out to be a helpful parking lot guide instead.
Then we saw a wide opening to enter into the restaurant backyard but a few feet to the right was a walk-up window for takeout orders.
Finally, there were plenty of adults with drinks at their table but also tons of kids running away from their parents as if they had coodies.
Fresas has a little of everything but at the same time, a perfectly narrow focus when it comes to their menu. Mexican. All day. Very easy to eat paleo/primal here.
After you soak in some of the artistic decor, you’ll then notice how friendly everyone is. I felt the Mexican vibe so I quickly ordered myself a “lean” margarita (Tequila + Lime Juice).
Now, it can be a challenge to get paleo/primal appetizers at a Mexican restaurant but we did pretty well.
Chipotle Bacon Guacamole: Chorizo, Adobo, Queso Fresco
Cheesy Cauliflower: w/ Monterey Mornay, Breadcrumbs. You can have a little cheat and take in some of the breadcrumbs or just skip the top layer.
Grilled Beets: Chimichurri, Cotija Cheese, Saffron-Chile Aioli, Pepitas.
Crispy Brussel Sprouts: w/ Pasilla Aioli
YUCATAN SPICE CHICKEN (Belle’s): This was a generous portion of meat. For chicken, I’d recommend the cheesy cauliflower side dish, from above.
Power Bol: Chicken Pastor, Power Greens, Avocado, Roasted Cauliflower, Sweet Potato, Pineapple Pico.
I love me some meat bowls. Nicely chopped up food just ready to be shoveled into your face. At Fresas, they have two Bol options and the Power Bol I ordered was full of food and definitely filled me up.
For those who read the blog each week, you know what comes next – Belle and her non-primal dessert. I took a small spoon tasting but tried to keep my hands on my camera instead.
For fun, here’s the Homemade Ice Cream
A very cool spot for a date but based on the action in the outdoor seating area, it’s also great for families.
We chowed down and we’ll definitely be back. See Belle’s perspective here.
