Where we ate: Freedmen’s, Austin TX
Meal type: Dinner
Party size: 14
Walking into Freedmen’s last Friday, I felt like a cowboy walking into the only saloon within a 100 mile radius. The building is made of sturdy concrete and looks like it could withstand a canon blast easily.
Inside, it’s outfitted with dark and aged wood with narrow hallways and steep staircases. And feeling like a cowboy was a great way to go about my night. Why? Well, it was my birthday, of course.
This is a real deal BBQ joint. If you are looking for a night out where you can feel masculine, eating meat and drinking tough drinks, Freedmen’s should be on the top of your list.
They have a wall of whiskey of all varieties, kept in cool little barrels. Once warmed up with that whiskey or a glass of red wine if you’re me, you get to feast on all the delicious red meat you can handle.
For this meal, which we chose to have served family-style, all of the dishes were delivered at once. So, here is how we chowed down:
Baked Beans: Not primal but a slow-carb dish nonetheless. I didn’t have any. I chose to save room for more meat.
Grilled Cabbage Slaw: cider vinegar, caraway seed, cilantro, honey. Paleo/Primal safe, and I had my fair share.
Pit Chili: corn chips, smoked cheddar, onion. Not primal/paleo if you eat the frito chips, but if you eat around them…you get a fun and harmless starter dish!
Now on to the big boys. I came for the meat, and here are the main dishes we went with:
Brisket: They offer fatty and lean cuts. We had both. They were incredibly tender, juicy, and coated perfectly with simple spices.
House-made Sausage: Regular and an Al Pastor version, which is what we went with. This was the favorite for most of our guests, including me.
Pork Spare Ribs: I had quite a few of these. They were dry rub – perfect for a paleo/primal diet.
Now, seeing as how it was my birthday, I of course had to get down with some dessert.
Also on the menu:
Smoked Banana Pudding: This is harmless enough. Yes, there is sugar but there is also plenty of banana. So, for a splurge, feel free to indulge.
Freedmen’s is a super chill, fun, and friendly BBQ spot in the University of Texas campus area. We’ll definitely be back to taste the rest of the menu.
