If you know me, you know that this post is a long time coming. Launderette. Launderette. LAUNDERETTE is my ever-y-thangggg and has been #1 on my “favorite restaurants in Austin” list since the first time I visited a year and a half ago, shortly after it opened.
It’s not just me who’s obsessed…not only was the restaurant a James Beard (YAS) finalist this year, it also received a “2016 Restaurants of the Year” title from Food & Wine, “2016 Best New Restaurants in Texas” from Texas Monthly, as well as “2015 Restaurant of the Year” from Austin Eater.
So, why do we all love it so? Besides the absolutely INSANE food (we’ll get to that in a second), this neighborhood restaurant and former actual laundromat is a bright (hello windows!) and welcoming space with a radiating energy you can’t ignore. Both the interior and patio have a relaxed and welcoming vibe – you can’t help but forget your worries and settle in.
The dishes are thoughtful and the flavors are big. The mixology is on point (you know I love my French 75s 😉 ).The knowledgeable, friendly wait staff is extremely descriptive when presenting the menu, and they actually RAVE about the chicken, which, surprisingly, is a must order at Launderette…
This week we doubled with our friends Kelley and Brant. To start, we got down with a couple fun cocktails (and a “mocktail” for the expecting momma) and then moved on to wine for dinner.
Before heading into mains, I highly recommend sharing a few of the “Snacky Bits” on the menu. We ordered the Labneh/Beet Hummus, the Rabbit & Hawk (Y’all. That brie you see was un. real.) and, my personal favorite, the Crudo.
As a palette cleanser before the mains, we had the Zucchini, which was served raw with mixed fresh herbs, pine nuts and feta cheese. AMAZIN’.
With our mains, we all shared a few sides: Kobocha Squash, Blackened Okra, and Sticky Brussels Sprouts. Check out their extensive veggie list on their menu, it’s actually the biggest section (be still my heart) – so many tasty options!
For dinner, Kelley ordered the PEI Mussels, Brant the Chicken Thighs…
Travis the Hangar Steak…
and me… the BRICK (EFFING) CHICKEN. GUYS. CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT THIS CHICKEN?? Now, I am typically not one to order the chicken. I feel like it’s just so…boring. Unadventurous. #Basic.
But, trust me when I say, this chicken is the polar opposite of ALL THAT. It is without a doubt one of the most delicious things I’ve put into my mouth…and I’ve eaten a lot of good food. Bonus: There’s brie in those whipped potatoes lining the bottom of that dish. Mmmhmm.
Last but not least, I present to you, the best dessert in the whole wide world…behold the Birthday Cake Ice Cream Sandwich.
We also got adventurous and tried some Salted Macadamia Profiteroles
The aforementioned Crudo, the Brick Chicken, along with the grand finale of the most perfect dessert of all time (the B-day cake sammie), keep Launderette at the tipity top of my list. I have yet to find similar dishes that beat those… However, my mom did come close with her chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream sandwiches over the fourth of July… #GoSally
See what Travis thought here! And while you’re at it, check out the latest episode of the podcast – not only do we touch on the restaurant a bit more, but we also share thoughts on RNC, David Chang’s Theory of Deliciousness, and the controversy surrounding the new Ghostbusters movie… #drama.
See you next time!
